The Danish Superliga is the highest level of Danish football and is administered by the Danish Football Association. Founded in 1991, the league began with 10 teams participating; however, this has since grown to 12. The Danish Superliga has been through many different iterations and sponsors over the years, with it most recently being sponsored by the United Federation of Danish Workers in 2019. 

When Does a Danish Superliga Season Run From

The Danish Superliga starts in July and runs until May of next year. There is also a short winter break included in the months of December and January. 

How Does The Danish Superliga Work 

In the Danish Superliga, there are 12 teams that play every other team twice, home and away, in a round-robin style tournament. The teams are ordered from 1st to 12th, and after all 22 games are played, the table is split in half into championship and relegation tables. Each table will then have all teams within play each other twice again, resulting in an additional 10 games for each team. 

The bottom 2 teams in the relegation table will be relegated into the league below, the 1st Division, whereas in the Championship table, teams are fighting for the league title and spots in Europe. Whoever finishes first in the Championship group will win the league and gain access to the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, while second place will gain access to the Europa Conference League qualifiers. Interestingly, once the tables are split, the points tallies from before the split continue to be built upon; however, teams cannot move tables. For example, if 7th place has 30 points and 6th place has 31 points, when the split takes place, both teams will enter their new leagues with the same tally. If, however, 7th place ends up with 40 points and 6th place has 39 points, they will not move leagues.

The Danish Superliga is home to many very impressive football clubs, each with its own long and storied history. The most currently successful clubs in the Danish Superliga include FC Copenhagen, Brondby, and FC Midtjylland. In terms of most successful clubs overall, however, that title belongs to FC Copenhagen. FC Copenhagen has won 15 titles throughout its history and, technically, even more. Before FC Copenhagen, there was a club named Kjøbenhavns Boldklub, which was a dominant force in Danish football for many years. However, in the early 1990s, they were in financial trouble and with the growth of new Copenhagen-based giants Brondby,  Kjøbenhavns Boldklub merged with Boldklub 1903 and formed FC Copenhagen as we know it today.
